Who we are: Our reputation comes from being in the addictions field for over 30 years. We practice compassionate, respectful counseling. Individuals receive continuity of care with the same counselors week-to-week. Evergreen receives referrals from courts, attorneys, Driver Intervention Programs, employers, EAP providers and treatment centers.
Why we started: When Evergreen started, Dayton had limited options for substance abuse services. If someone had been charged with an alcohol/drug-related offense, their choices were often either no education/counseling or intensive outpatient (IOP), which could last up to 12+weeks and require 3 hours/session.
The key reason we started Evergreen was to provide services for those who fit somewhere in the middle. Having a scaled-down version of services as an alternative to IOP teaches clients ◆ the differences between substance use, abuse and dependence, ◆ the science of addiction, ◆ how to diagnose a Substance Use Disorder, ◆ what measures to take if one has developed such a problem. We are not a "one-size-fits-all" counseling practice. We provide group and individual counseling focused on each client's specialized needs.
Who are clients are: Our clients are usually individuals charged with an OVI, Reckless Operation, Physical Control, Marijuana OVI and the like.
How we counsel: Our approach is non-confrontational. We present clients with tools to make appropriate adjustments in their substance use habits. Clients leave with realistic plans to avoid further consequences from their substance use. This may include total abstinence or reducing consumption for mood-altering substances, while always stressing a "zero tolerance" for driving while impaired.
What services we offer: We often see clients for a condensed period of time. This usually consists of an Assessment, four Education groups and between 1-4 Individual Counseling sessions. In addition, there may be times where we require clients to attend 12-Step meetings.
What our scope is: We primarily deal with alcohol and marijuana abuse issues while leaving opiate addiction (and similar drugs) to providers more equipped to address those needs. Some clients expressed relief to learn that Evergreen's counseling groups focus on alcohol and marijuana and not on heavier drugs. Clients find they are then better able to concentrate on their own alcohol/marijuana use issues.
How clients see us: Feedback we consistently get from clients include: ◆ "Thank you for treating me with respect. Thank you for not judging me." ◆ "I didn't think I could benefit from this, but you have really helped me." ◆ "Thank you for your kindness and encouragement! It's made a difference in my life!"
